Heat pumps are made to remove the chilly air from a house without freezing. The heat pump must enter defrost mode when it gets too cold to stop this from happening. The heat pump usually enters air conditioning mode when in defrost mode until the problem with the freezing is resolved. then you can return to heat mode.
