Heil furnace old
A Heil furnace old is a type of furnace that was popular in the era when coal was the most common fuel for heating. The heating process is achieved by burning coal at the top and distributing heat through a metal heat exchanger. The heat exchanger, or “heating surface” in some texts, provides all the heating power to the house.
William Henry Heil was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 17, 1867. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated as an electrical engineer in 1889. In 1890 he was an instructor of physics at Cornell University and became a professor there in 1891. Heil got his first patent for a radiant heating system in 1892. In 1896 he received many patents related to furnaces.
Heil’s first furnace was patented on December 27, 1897, and that year, he formed the company “Heil Company” with his father, William M. Heil Sr., their only financial investor. His most famous patented invention is the “Fireless Cooker,” which did not use fire or flame to cook food but used radiant heat from a furnace or oven.
